Havana

Melia Cohiba
This striking contemporary four-star high-rise launched the Havana hotel scene into the modern age when it opened in 1994. Notwithstanding its lonesome location, the city's first business hotel also draws a significant number of tour groups as well as individual tourists seeking the highest accommodation standards the city can offer. Until the opening of the stellar Hotel Saratoga, this hotel stood in a class of its own. This hotel also does a better job than its competition at drawing honeymooners with three-day-minimum specials. Rising from the base of Paseo, a one-minute walk from the Malecon and a 10-minute taxi ride from Habana Vieja, this handsome structure is floodlit at night. Beyond the automatic sliding-glass doorways, with their liveried doormen, a travertine-floored lobby is elegantly appointed with contemporary art pieces and lush leather sofas.

Melia Havana Libre
Atop a knoll overlooking the rocky shoreline across the street from the blossoming Miramar Trade Center, this hotel aims squarely at a business clientele, to whom it offers Havana's most comprehensive facilities. The convention center is nearby, as are key legal services, but wheels are required for guests intent on sightseeing. The hotel debuted in 1989 as a new construction of the Spanish chain Melia in collaboration with its Cuban development partner. Viewed from 3ra Avenida, the hotel's blunt, 21st-century architecture jars. Walls of blue-tinted reflective glass break up the otherwise austere facade. A horseshoe-shaped driveway ascends to a porte cochere opening to an elegant atrium lobby glistening with green and gray marble floors and marble-clad pillars. Sitting areas are stocked with rattan lounge chairs, palms bring nature indoors, and there are pools with small fountains.

Trinidad Area Hotels

Trinidad: Hotel Brisas Trinidad del Mar

The fanciest beach hotel in the general area of Trinidad, this place is semi-luxurious and easygoing. For those looking to combine beach time, great sea and mountain views, and easy access to Cuba's finest colonial city, this is without doubt the best option. The all-inclusive hotel imitates the famed colonial architecture of nearby Trinidad, with pastel colors and pastel-colored imitations of the town's more famous landmarks, including the San Francisco tower and the Plaza Mayor. The hotel is on one of the best sections of Playa Ancón, and it has a great pool and all the services one could want, including language and dance classes and diving. Rooms are handsomely outfitted, nicely decorated with pale yellow walls and blue accents.

Cienfuegos: Hotel Jagua (or similar) With its magnificent location in the well-known residential area of Punta Gorda, in the southern city of Cienfuegos, the Jagua is considered one of Cuba's most famous hotels. Its comfortable rooms are characterized by the spaciousness of the 50's and offer beautiful panoramic views, which announce the nice nature and wild life of the surroundings. In the Jagua's unique setting, one can enjoy the ocean landscape of the placid bay as well as exquisite restaurants such as the famous Palacio de Valle. The city center is just a few minutes away. Surrounding its charming park are the Cathedral, the Terry Theater and other attractive constructions.
